Types of IT Project Management Roles

IT project management roles pay well and offer stable employment. Anyone who has been working in the IT industry can work their way up to take on this type of role. It is a good way to move from working as a contractor to a job that offers relatively regular hours, stability, good benefits and pay of between £45,000 and £60,000. Importantly there are plenty of jobs to choose from there are always literally hundreds of project management roles advertised on the specialist IT job board cwjobs.co.uk.

Corporate Positions

Many large companies still run their own in house IT teams. These firms need a team of permanent IT managers, and often appoint an IT project manager. Typically this role involves overseeing the development and implementation of all of a company’s IT projects. To be able to apply for this type of role you will need management experience as well as experience of working on a range of IT projects. You will have to be familiar with the IT platforms the company currently uses. Experience of the industry the firm operates in is usually also necessary, because you need to understand what the firm does to be able to develop new systems for them.

One off Projects

However, there are also a lot of project management roles out there that involve working on one off projects. These roles can also be long-term. Usually a project manager will be recruited to work on a specific project, but they will be expected to be involved in the entire project. This means they will start by working on the conception and design of the system, oversee the development of it and carry out the implementation and troubleshooting. Given that most IT projects take several years this kind of project management role still provides relatively stable employment.

The qualifications for this kind of role varies depending on the type of project. Good qualifications and experience of the IT platform being used for the project is usually required. A candidate with previous experience of managing a team is more likely to secure this type of job.
